Syria: Islamist rebels capture government stronghold of Ariha
May 29 , 2015
Islamist rebels have captured Ariha city, a government stronghold in western Syria’s Idlib province, according to media reports.
The coalition of rebel fighters that calls itself the Jaish al-Fateh includes the al-Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda affiliate.
However, the Syrian military claimed that the city was still witnessing heavy fighting.
If confirmed, the fall of Ariha — one of the few remaining government strongholds in the area — would give the Islamist fighters effective control of most of Idlib province which borders Turkey.
