Sydney gunman had 'illegal firearm'

  • Man Haron Monis, the Iranian gunman who took 17 people hostage in a Sydney café on Monday, was in possession of an illegal firearm, the police have said.

Australian prime minister Tony Abbott had raised questions about how Monis got a gun despite a record of violence and criminality.

Two hostages and Monis died in the siege after police commandos stormed the café.

The Australian police said “there is no record” of Monis ever having a firearms licence.
