Swiss Voters Back Government's Plan to Ban Building of New Nuclear Plants
May 21 , 2017
As per reports, Swiss government’s plan to provide subsidies for renewable energy to reduce dependence on nuclear power was backed by voters. Partly sparked by the Fukushima disaster of 2011 resulting in leakage of radioactive material, the effort mirrors the efforts from other places in Europe.
The new law will boost domestic renewable energy while reducing reliance on foreign supplies and cut usage of fossil fuels.
Under the Swiss system of direct democracy which gives the voters final say in major policy issue, the provisional final figures showed support at 58.2%.
