Swiss tourist gang-raped in central India

  • A Swiss woman was gang-raped by a group of men in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, police said on Saturday.

The woman was attacked by eight to ten men while camping with her husband in a village in Datia district on Friday.

It is believed the assailants overpowered the husband before gang-raping his wife.

Around 20 people have been arrested in connection with the attack. The Swiss embassy has demanded a thorough investigation on the incident.

The victim, 39, has since been admitted to hospital in Gwalior. She is conscious and is reported to have spoken to police authorities.

The couple had been cycling from Orchha to Agra, a distance of 155 miles, when they decided to camp overnight at the village.

According to local media reports, the victim's husband stated that the group of men had approached them at around 9:30 pm and began beating him before he was tied up. They then went on to sexually assault his wife in front of him.

The attackers also stole the couple's valuables, including $185 and a laptop computer.

The attack took place three months after the gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old female student on a bus in the capital, New Delhi, which led to nationwide protests against the treatment of women in India.
