Suicide-vest workshop discovered in Mali
June 17 , 2013
The French army has discovered a workshop to make suicide bomber vests in northern Mali.
Around 11,000 pounds of fertilizer, which was meant to be used as explosives, was also found in the town of Bourem, located along the banks of the Niger River.
A sample of a suicide vest and 18 sewing machines were discovered at the workshop.
Since January, some 4,000 French troops have led an operation against Islamist militants in the country.
The al-Qaeda-linked groups seized control of northern Mali following a coup in March 2012. They currently control major cities including Gao, Kidal and Timbuktu.
