Suicide bomb kills 25 at Afghan funeral

  • A suicide bomber killed at least 25 people and injured 30 at a funeral on Tuesday in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar.

Several hundred villagers and officials were attending the ceremony of a tribal elder in the district of Dur Baba, when a man detonated a vest he was wearing loaded with explosives.

District governor Hamesha Gul, believed to be the main target, was among those injured.

The attack comes after locals recently staged an uprising against Taliban insurgents in the region.

Tribal elders and local intelligence officials have blamed the Taliban for the bombing, describing it as a retaliation attack by militants in response to the demonstration.

The Taliban has not admitted responsibility for the attack but they often target government officials and their opponents at public functions.
