Street clashes killed 38 in Egypt
October 7 , 2013
Clashes between supporters of the ousted Mohamed Morsi and security forces killed 38 people in Egypt today. Demonstrators threw firebombs as the battle continued for hours in the city of Cairo; the police used tear gas as well as gunshots.
The government had chosen the 40th anniversary of the beginning of the 1973 Mideast War to pay tribute to the armed forces whose chief ousted Morsi in July; the clashes occurred on the same day.
An AP photographer said he saw nine bodies lying on the ground in Cairo and most of them appeared to have gunshot wounds.
