Stray rocket kills at least 20 in southern Afghanistan

  • At least 20 people were killed in Afghanistan’s southern province of Helmand on Wednesday, 31 December, when the members of a wedding party were hit by a stray rocket, according to media reports. The rocket struck the house, which was used as a wedding venue. More than 40 people were injured and most of them were women and children. The injured were taken to hospital in Lashkar Gah.

    According to an eyewitness, the members of the wedding party had gathered outside to welcome the bride when the incident took place. The accident happened during a battle between Afghan soldiers and Taliban militants. It was the last day of US and NATO combat missions in Afghanistan.
