Stranded ship freed in Antarctica
January 8 , 2014
Two trapped ships in Antarctica got freed before the US ship even arrived to their rescue.
Reports suggest that the direction of the wind caused a crack in the ice surrounding the Xue Long and Akademik Shokalskiy. "We're going slowly and zig-zagging," the captain of the Russian ship said. "It's tough going so far, a lot of mist, visibility is no more than 500 meters."
He mentioned that the ship had made 20 nautical miles at the moment and Xue was close behind them as well. Shokalskiy was on a research mission when it got trapped in the ice on Christmas Eve and the Xue sailed to rescue it but ended up getting stuck itself.
All passengers from the ship were evacuated using a helicopter and some crew members were asked to stick to the vessel.
