Sri Lankan Presidential Election is Over, Results Expected by Sunday Evening

  • The Sri Lankan presidential election, held on Saturday, is closed now. The Election commission chief Mahinda Deshapriya told media that the ballot counting process will continue throughout the night and the results will tentatively be announced by Sunday evening. The independent Centre for Monitoring Election Violence has reportedly said that on Election Day, at least 196 violations have been reported, which includes 61 intimidation cases and at least 3 assaults. The contest in this presidential election is between the government minister Sajith Premadasa and former defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. While Rajapaksa has promised about overhauling the country’s national security, Sajith Premadasa has vowed to fire up the rural economy by offering free housing, free sanitary pads for women, and free school uniforms for students.
