May 20 , 2012
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse has ordered the release of jailed former army chief, Sarath Fonseka.
Fonseka is due to be freed on Monday after all formalities are completed.
The former head of the Sri Lankan military was arrested two years ago after standing against Rajapakse for the presidency.
Fonseka was widely credited with the 2009 victory over the Tamil Tigers.
This weekend marks the end of Sri Lanka’s 26-year civil war.
