Sri Lankan Political Crisis ends for Now as Mahinda Rajapaksa Resigns
December 16 , 2018
Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned from his Prime Ministerial position, just after 7-weeks of being sworn in. During a ceremony at his house, he signed the resignation letter. Rajapaksa’s resignation thereby brought a 2-month long power struggle that almost jeopardized Sri Lanka’s political stability. Ex-PM Ranil Wickremesinghe will reportedly assume the prime ministerial position yet again. The political crisis started back in October when the President Maithripala Sirisena sacked the then PM Wickremesinghe and dissolved the parliament in November. However, the Supreme Court on Thursday called the parliament dissolving issue by the President illegal. The President has now reportedly agreed to swear in Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
