Sri Lankan Police Arrests Islamic Scholar having Involvement with Easter Sunday Terrorist Attack

  • Sri Lankan authorities have arrested 60-year old Mohamed Aliyar (a Saudi Arabia educated scholar) for having links with Zahran Hashim (the suspected ringleader of the Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday bombings). Mohamed Aliyar is suspected of being the main person operating financial transactions related to the worst ever terrorist attack in Sri Lanka in recent times. The suspect has also been charged with involvement with training the suicide bombers who spearheaded the attacks on Sri Lankan hotels and churches, killing more than 250 people. Sri lankan police hasn’t given details of the accusations against the arrested Maulavi. This arrest has thrown spotlight on the rising threat of Salafi-Wahhabi Islam (an extreme form of Islamic doctrine, practiced mainly in Saudi Arabia) on the Muslim population in Sri Lanka.
