Sri Lankan parliament votes to limit president's powers

  • The Sri Lankan parliament has voted to cut back the power of the president, and restored a two-term limit for the office.

    Mahinda Rajapaksa, the former president who lost in the January poll, had expanded the presidential powers. The current president Maithripala Sirisena had pledged to carry out an amendment to curb the powers.

    Also, the president can no longer dissolve parliament till it has completed at least four and a half years.
