Spanish PM Rajoy Vows to End Catalonia Independence Standoff by Imposing Direct Rule

  • Prime Minister of Spain Mariano Rajoy, while speaking at the European Union summit in Brussels, said that their aim is to “observance of the law” on one hand and "return to institutional normality" on the other. He emphasized on the fact that his response on the matter of Catalonia has adequate backing from Spanish socialist party (PSOE) as well as the Citizens (Ciudadanos) party. In an emergency cabinet meeting today it was decided that Catalonia’s autonomy is suspended. Reports say Spain will introduce direct rule from next Saturday. Citing “conscious and systematic rebellion and disobedience” by the Catalan government, Spanish PM said that he is invoking constitution’s article 155 for restoring rule of law.
