Spanish Government Imposes Article 155 after Catalan Government Declares Independence

Catalan regional government, on Friday, voted overwhelmingly in favor of declaring independence from Spain. While 70 voted in favor of independence, 10 voted against the motion, and 2 were reported abstentions. After the self-declared independence of Catalonia, Spanish Senate responded by voting to implement Article 155 for ending Catalonia’s autonomy. 214 voted in favor of implementing Article 155, 47 voted against it, and 1 is reported abstention. Prime Minister of Spain Mariano Rajoy has said after the voting that they are taking direct control of the government institutions in Catalonia for restoring regional legality. Regional police force’s head Mossos d’Esquadra has also been removed by the Spanish government.
