Spanish Court Suspends Swearing-in of Puigdemont as President of Catalonia
January 28 , 2018
A constitutional court in Spain has ruled that pro-independence politician Carles Puigdemont can’t assume the presidency of Catalonia as he can’t lead the regional parliament from abroad. Puigdemont is currently living in Brussels after Spain called Catalonian independence illegal and slapped sedition and rebellion charges against him. While Spanish government argued that a fugitive can’t lead a regional parliament, Puigdemont said that he can govern Catalonia from Belgium by using technology such as video links. The Spanish court’s statement suspended Puigdemont's swearing-in till he appears in person in the parliament of Catalonia and also receives prior permission from the court in swearing in.
