Spain Crisis Deepens as Catalonia Rejects Spanish Government's Direct Rule Approach from Madrid

  • Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, after an emergency meeting on Saturday, announced to impose direct control on Catalonia after stripping Carles Puigdemont’s government of its powers. Rajoy categorically mentioned that Spain is “not ending Catalan autonomy” but stripping functions and powers of the regional government, who he claims “have acted outside the law”. Statement of spanish government clearly points out that they will impose series of measures on sensitive issues including security and public order, telecommunications, budget, taxation, and financial management. Catalonia President Carles Puigdemont, while addressing on Catalan television, rejected Rajoy’s move and compared current Spanish government’s action with that of General Franco’s dictatorship during 1939-1975.
