South Korea reports first deaths from Mers infection

  • Two South Koreans have died of Mers (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome), the country’s first deaths from the virus.

The two victims are a 58-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man. The woman reportedly had contact with a South Korean who had contracted the infection in the Middle East.

Most Mers cases have been reported from the Middle East in countries such as Saudi Arabia.

South Korea has 17 officially confirmed cases; hundreds of people who may have come in contact with the infected persons have been put in quarantine.
