South Korea, Japan mark 70 years since end of World War 2

  • South Korea and Japan have marked 70 years since the end of the Second World War.

Korea was freed from occupation after Japan surrendered to the allied forces in August 1945.

Japan’s prime minister Shinzo Abe attended a ceremony in Tokyo, and a minute’s silence was observed.

Abe has expressed “profound grief” over his country’s role in the war, but did not issue a fresh apology for Japan’s wartime actions.

South Korea and China want a more “sincere” expression of regret from the Japanese leadership.
