South Africa deploys army in 'volatile' areas hit by anti-migrant violence
April 22 , 2015
The army has been deployed in volatile areas of Johannesburg and Durban after anti-foreigner attacks left at least seven people dead in the past few weeks.
Describing the move as a “last resort”, Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said that the soldiers would be stationed in areas where migrants from African countries such as Malawi and Zimbabwe have been targeted.
Acknowledging the criticism of the government’s move, Mapisa-Nqakula said those “vulnerable will appreciate it.”
Hundreds of migrants have left South Africa in recent days in wake of the violence.
