September 6 , 2014
Somali militant leader Ahmed Abdi Godane was killed in an American air strike earlier in the week, the US has confirmed.
Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said the killing of 37-year-old Godane, co-founder of the al-Shabaab, was a “major symbolic and operational loss” for the Islamist militant group.
Six al-Shabaab militants, including Godane, were reportedly killed in the US strike on vehicles carrying a group of fighers in Somalia on Monday.
Godane was behind the 2013 attack on the Nairobi mall which killed more than 65 people.
