Socialists set to form coalition government in Portugal

  • Three socialist parties in Portugal have reached an agreement to form a government after October’s election did not give a clear majority to any party or coalition.

The centre-right coalition led by Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho may now have to leave office. With just 99 seats in the 230-member House, it is 17 seats short of the numbers needed.

Socialist Party leader Antonio Costa said he had the support of two smaller far-left parties.
