Slovakian Political Crisis Deepens as 65,000 Protesters Call for Early Election

  • Slovakian political turmoil continues as 65,000 protesters attended anti-government protests for third consecutive week. The protest continued even after Prime Minister Robert Fico resigned after the mass outrage following suspected murder of journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova. Demonstrators believe Robert Fico will continue exercising power on the system through his replacement party colleague Peter Pellegrini. That’s why protesters press for early election, well before the 4-year term of Fico’s coalition government comes to an end in 2020. Protesters say the investigative journalist was killed as his final unfinished investigative story unravelled the nexus between the political system and organized Italian mafia.
