Slovakia: Referendum to strengthen ban on same-sex marriage fails
February 8 , 2015
A referendum in Slovakia aimed at strengthening a ban on same-sex marriage has failed following a low turnout.
Less than 22% of the people eligible to vote participated in the referendum, falling far short of the 50% needed for the ballot to be valid.
Voters had to answer three questions, including whether a marriage could only be between a man and a woman.
Gay rights activists had urged people to boycott the vote.
