Six people busted in radioactive theft in Mexico
December 8 , 2013
Six people have been arrested for stealing a truck full of radioactive material in Mexico. They are all being currently tested for radioactive exposure at a hospital in Pachuca.
According to an official, the men are showing signs of skin irritation and are dizzy. However, only one of them is suffering from vomiting, which is a sign for radiation poisoning.
The suspects are going to be taken to the federal authorities in Mexico after the hospitalization. Considering that the shipment contained about 3,000 curries of radioactivity, "it would probably be fatal to be close to this amount of unshielded radioactive material for a period in the range of a few minutes to an hour," the International Atomic Energy Agency said.
An expert mentioned that the thieves will most likely die due to exposure.
