Sierra Leone Votes for New President

  • Voters of Sierra Leone are all set to choose their next president on Saturday. While incumbent President Ernest Bai Koroma (who is stepping down after successfully completing two 5 year terms) has chosen his party colleague Samura Kamara (an economist by training) as his successor and also the ruling All People's Congress party’s presidential candidate, former military coup leader Julius Maada Bio (representing Sierra Leone People's Party) is the rival candidate in the fray. In the first round of the election, 53 year old Julius Maada Bio received most votes (43.3 per cent). However, in Sierra Leone, a president is elected only if it gets 55 per cent of the vote.
