Shia Houthi rebels clash with troops in Yemen
January 19 , 2015
Army troops in Yemen clashed with Shia Houthi rebels in Sanaa on Monday, January 19, close to the presidential palace. Gunfire was heard across the capital city, media reports said.
The exchange of fire comes after the rebels abducted President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi’s chief of staff and two guards on Saturday.
The Houthis claimed that they were trying to save a ceasefire between them and the president that was brokered by the UN in September.
Instability in Yemen in the past few years has helped the al-Qaeda consolidate its position in the country.
