Seventh Fleet Commander of the US Navy to be relieved of command

  • The decision to relieve Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin, incharge of Japan-based fleet, comes after the tragic collision between USS John S. McCain and a merchant vessel. In the fatal incident, seven sailors lost their lives and 10 are missing, as told by the commander of US Pacific Fleet Adm. Scott Swift. According to a US official, “An expedited change in leadership was needed” and Aucoin will be removed from service on Wednesday. Bodies of some of the missing sailors have been found by the US Navy divers. An international search operation was launched to look for the missing sailors, involving aircraft divers and vessels from the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia.
