Scottish referendum: Salmond clear winner in debate with Darling

  • First minister Alex Salmond emerged victorious in a fractious debate over Scottish independence, with snap polls saying he had fared much better than his opponent, Alistair Darling, the No campaign leader, according to media reports.

In front of cheering Yes supporters, Salmond accused Darling of “defending Conservative policies on a joint platform with the Conservatives.” Darling denied the charge, but the first minister had seized the momentum.

Appealing to Scotland’s voters to choose independence from the union, Salmond said: “This is our moment. Let’s use it now.”
