Saudi-led airstrikes in Yemen: UNESCO 'shocked' at destruction of Sanaa's heritage
June 13 , 2015
A Saudi-led airstrike has destroyed historic buildings in the Old City of the Yemini capital Sanaa.
At least four such buildings have been reduced to rubble, reports says. UNESCO, the conservation agency of the United Nations, has condemned the attacks.
The Old City is home to more than a hundred mosques and thousands of houses that date back to 11th century and before. Irina Bokova, the UNESCO director general, said in a statement that he was “profoundly distressed” by the damage done to these “jewels of Islamic urban landscape.”
