Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz dies

  • Saudi ruler Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has died, aged around 90.

He was in hospital for weeks and suffering from a lung infection, media reports said.

According to a statement by royal officials on Friday, January 23, his half-brother Salman, 79, has become the new king.

Abdullah had become the king of Saudi Arabia in 2005. In recent years, he was frequently ill.

Muqrin, the late king’s half-brother, is the new crown prince.

Expressing his condolences, the U.S. President Barack Obama said King Abdullah “was always candid” as a leader “and had the courage of his convictions.”
