Saudi Arabia: Poet sentenced to death for 'renouncing Islam'
November 21 , 2015
A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a poet to death for renouncing Islam, reports say.
Ashraf Fayadh, 35, a poet of Palestinian origin and an art curator, has been given a month to appeal against the ruling. He was originally sentenced to a four-year prison term and 800 lashes in May 2014. But after a retrial last month, a new judges’ panel ordered his execution.
Fayadh’s backers say hardliners in the kingdom were punishing him for posting a video online that shows members of the religious police lashing a man in Abha city.
