Same-sex couples can marry anywhere in the US: Supreme Court

  • In a historic decision, the Supreme Court of the United States has declared that gay and lesbian couples have the right to marry anywhere in the country.

Same-sex couples already had the right to marry in 36 states along with the District of Columbia.

Now, the 5-4 ruling by the country’s highest court means that the 14 remaining states – most of them Republican-dominated – need to stop enforcing bans on such marriages.

Welcoming the court’s decision, President Obama described it as a major step “in our march toward equality.”
