Saharan dust takes over London
April 3 , 2014
There's an exceptional amount of smog in London and some of the air pollution is to blame on the dust that has come from Sahara.
"We usually see this happen several times a year when big storms in the Sahara coincide with southerly winds to bring that dust here," an expert said. "The main sources we have are vehicle transport and the industrial process; when you put that alongside the unusual weather consequences like the Saharan dust ...than that's when you get these few days of unusually high pollution."
Air pollution in the region is so high that it could even reach 10 on the nation's 10-point scale in some areas. Moreover, conditions are expected to get worse and "more dust rain is possible during showers expected later this week."
