Russia's Putin fires defence minister
November 7 , 2012
Russian President Vladimir Putin has fired the country’s defence minister after his ministry was caught up in a corruption scandal.
Anatoly Serdyukov was replaced on Tuesday by a former emergencies minister and loyal supporter of Putin, Sergei Shoigu.
Russia's top investigative agency is looking into the sale of ministry assets at prices below market value.
Putin said he had removed Serdyukov to create "conditions for an objective investigation".
Last month, Russian investigators raided the offices of a state-controlled military contractor and began a probe into the company following claims it had sold assets to commercial firms at a loss of nearly $100 billlion.
