Russia to reopen spy base in Cuba
July 17 , 2014
Russia is set to reopen an electronic listening post — a spy base — in Cuba.
The Lourdes base, which is 150 miles from the US coast, was reportedly used by the Soviet Union to keep a watch over America during the Cold War.
The base had been closed in 2001. The agreement to re-open it came during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the Caribbean island last week.
During the visit Russia wrote off 90% of Cuba’s $32bn debt from the Soviet era, reports said.
