Russia has sent fighter jets to Syria, says US

  • Russia has sent fighter planes to Syria in support of the Bashar al-Assad government, according to US officials, leading to talks between the defense chiefs of the US and Russia.

Ash Carter, the US defense secretary, and Russia’s defense minister Sergei Shoigu agreed to explore measures for avoiding accidental military encounters, known as “deconfliction”.

While the Islamic State militant group is a common adversary of both the Americans and Russians, Moscow’s approach towards moderate US-backed rebels fighting Assad is not entirely clear.
