Russia boycotts European rights body

  • Russia has boycotted the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (Pace) to protest the sanctions imposed against it, according to media reports.

The Strasbourg-based Council, one of Europe’s oldest rights organizations, suspended Moscow’s voting rights in 2014 after the crisis in Crimea and has renewed its ban on Wednesday, January 28.

Russia said in response that it will boycott sessions till the end of the current year.

The move comes as fighting has intensified in eastern Ukraine in the past weeks, with pro-Russia rebels stepping up their offensive against government forces.
