Romney kicks off key state tour with new running mate

  • U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, have set off on a tour of key states that they need to win in the November polls.

Romney and Ryan are set to tour North Carolina, Florida, Ohio as well as Ryan's home state of Wisconsin.

The pair has already visited Virginia, where Romney announced his choice for vice-president on Saturday.

Ryan is the chairman of the House of Representatives budget committee and produced a controversial alternative budget to counter Obama's plans in 2011 and 2012.

He has pledged to rescue the country from "high unemployment, declining incomes and crushing debt".

However, President Barack Obama's campaign said Ryan represented "flawed" economic policies that would repeat "catastrophic" mistakes.

Recent opinion polls suggest a close race between Romney and Obama, with Obama marginally in the lead in most surveys.
