Romania: Fire and explosion at Bucharest nightclub kills 27

  • At least 27 people have been killed and about 180 injured in a fire and explosion at a nightclub in central Bucharest in what is being described as the worst such incident in Romania in recent memory.

There were more than 300 people inside Colectiv Club in the Romanian capital at the time, reports say.

Some witnesses were quoted as saying that a pyrotechnic display near the stage triggered the fire, which was followed by a stampede as people tried to rush out of the club. However, the exact cause of the fire has not been ascertained.

The injured have been admitted to ten hospitals in Bucharest, authorities said.
