Residents Told To Evacuate Gulf Coast As Hurricane Laura Nears

  • Laura heightened to Hurricane on Tuesday and is likely to rapidly intensify in the next 36 hours as it is moving fast up the Gulf of Mexico toward Texas and Louisiana. Erik Blake, Hurricane Specialist of National Hurricane Center, tweeted that "Now that #Laura’s eye is forming, there’s just not a lot of doubt that this will be a large and extremely dangerous hurricane for eastern Texas and Louisiana". As per the NHC bulletin, the Hurricane currently has maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and is forecast to escalate into a major Category 3 storm or higher over the next day or so, with winds potentially reaching 115 mph. The center of the storm is situated 465 miles from Galveston, Texas, and it is moving at a rapid speed of 17 mph.
