Rescue bid fails as US hostage Luke Somers killed

  • American journalist Luke Somers and Pierre Korkie, a teacher from South Africa, were killed by militants during a failed rescue bid in Yemen.

The operation was carried out jointly by special forces from the US and Yemen in Shabwa region.

President Obama has condemned the “barbaric murder” of the two captives who were being held by al-Qaeda.

This was the second attempt to rescue the UK-born Somers. In November, US forces freed several captives from a cave in Yemen, but the militants had already moved Somers.
