'Reform through labor' camps exist in country, says North Korea

  • A North Korean diplomat has acknowledged that “reform through labor” camps exist in the country.

North Korean official Choe Myong-nam, however, described the camps as “detention centers” in which “people are improved through their mentality”.

Officials from the North Korean foreign ministry also said that a senior figure from the regime had visited the European Union headquarters and indicated an openness to dialogue linked to rights issues.

Last month a damning UN report had said that the human rights situation in North Korea constituted a crime against humanity.
