Red alert sounded after volcanic eruption in Icelandic glacier
August 24 , 2014
Iceland has raised the aviation warning code to red, after a volcano erupted under the Dyngjujökull glacier.
Red is the highest color-coded warning on a five-point scale.
An evacuation has already been carried out in the area where the Bárðarbunga volcano is located. The country’s Met department said that a “small subglacial lava-eruption” had begun.
The 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland had led to the shutting down of Europe’s airspace for nearly a week.
