Recapture of Sloviansk turning point in conflict, says Ukraine president
July 6 , 2014
Ukraine's president Petro Poroshenko has called the recapture of Sloviansk, a stronghold of pro-Russian fighters, the beginning of a “turning point” in the conflict.
Sloviansk was at the heart of the rebels’ so-called People’s Republic of Donetsk.
Poroshenko cautioned against declaring a “complete victory” for government forces fighting the rebels at this stage, but said that taking back Sloviansk was of “huge symbolic importance”.
Other important areas are, however, still under the control of the pro-Russians rebels.
