Raul Castro urges US to end trade embargo on Cuba
December 18 , 2014
Cuba’s president Raul Castro has urged the United States to bring an end to its five-decade trade embargo as the two countries started talks aimed at restoring diplomatic relations.
Castro said the embargo had caused “enormous human and economic damage" to Cuba.
However, it is up to the Republican-dominated American Congress to lift the embargo.
US president Barack Obama and Castro have agreed on several measures to improve relations, including the release of Alan Gross, a US contractor held by Cuba.
