Raped five-year-old girl dies in central India
May 1 , 2013
A five-year-old girl has passed away two weeks after being raped in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
The girl died on Monday evening, according to the hospital in Nagpur city where she was being treated.
She was found unconscious at a farm on April 18 and was later airlifted to Nagpur in neighboring Maharashtra state two days later.
So far, one person has been arrested in connection with the attack.
The attack came less than a month after the rape and abduction of another five-year-old girl in New Delhi.
She is said to be recovering after she being raped, tortured and abandoned in a locked room for more than 48 hours.
Two men have been held over that incident.
The issue of sexual violence has come under intense scrutiny following the gang rape and murder of a student on a New Delhi bus in December.
Last month, India passed a new bill containing tougher punishments, including the death penalty, for rapists.
