'Quasi-military intervention required to tackle Ebola outbreak'

  • Peter Piot, the scientist who identified the Ebola virus in the 1970s, has called upon the British government to back a “quasi-military intervention” to stop the outbreak that is spreading in west Africa.

Piot, who is the director, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said that given the scale of the epidemic, a UN peacekeeping force was needed in West Africa along with large-scale donations of everything from ambulances to trucks. Many doctors and nurses on the ground were required too, he said.
