Puerto Rico goes to polls on becoming the 51st state
June 12 , 2017
Puerto Rico is going to hold its fifth plebiscite in the last 50 years on whether it would become the 51st state in the US. The referendum has been conceived by Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP), the ruling party of Puerto Rico, and Ricardo Rosello, the Governor of Puerto Rico. He came to power by winning the elections in November 2016 at the age of just 37 years. Much of that win can be attributed to the fact that he promised that he would push for statehood once he came to power.
